Here is what you missed by not stepping inside, where you certainly would have been welcomed.
Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg was warmly embraced by more than 150 supporters, including fellow councilmembers Phil Andrews, Roger Berliner, Marc Elrich, Valerie Ervin, and Nancy Floreen.
County Executive Ike Leggett made a passionate appeal to return Trachtenberg to the Council.
“She is not a leader who looks at the political winds and says this is the popular thing to do. She does what is in the best interests of Montgomery County,” said Leggett. “We can’t make a mistake here.”
Councilmember Trachtenberg said, “Four years ago, voters all over Montgomery County elected me to the County Council. I said then, and I repeat now, that I did not get elected to make calculating decisions between special interests. I was going to make a difference for all our citizens. And with their support, I have.”
Earlier in the day, Councilmember Trachtenberg, as chair of the Management and Fiscal Policy Committee, passed through the Council a new fiscal plan to build up the county reserve fund and to stop using non-recurring revenues for the operating budget.
“To hear some of the candidates in this race you would think all we need to do solve our fiscal issues is to sit the council members around a campfire and sing Kumbaya. It’s going to take people who are willing to do the work, people who have experience, and people who are willing to talk the truth, even if that means disappointing friends,” said Councilmember Trachtenberg.
“The truth is that if the folks had adopted my 2008 cost-of-living proposal which called for a modest reduction of the benefit, we would not have had to furlough county employees this year. And we’re not done making hard decisions.
“And we just have to tell the leaders of the county employee unions, yes we want the very best teachers and the very best services and we love our dedicated and hard-working employees, but the county government is not an employment agency. We’re here to serve our million constituents not just the fortunate ones who carry a union card that they should be proud of. “
Oh, and we also brought water to the picketers.

Councilmember Marc Elrich, in his remarks, directly addressed the issue of the pickets.
“We don’t have the luxury of being stupid any more. We need a councilmember who understands that the commitment to tacking care of the poor and the people who need, begings by having a financial house in order," said Elrich.

"I’m happy to be here today. I am sorry I had to walk across a picket line o get here. Hopefully at some point folks will understand that the work that Duchy is doing and this council is doing is in their long term interest. It may not be best thing for tomorrow, but it certainly is in the long-term interest of them and everyone else in Montgomery county."
