Supporters of former Sen. Thomas Bromwell are pleading for a lenient sentencing:
Bromwell, 58, admitted in July that he accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in payoffs from a Baltimore construction company executive in return for securing publicly funded contracts.You can read the letters (in .pdf format) here and here as well as the memo on sentencing from Bromwell's lawyer. Bromwell's son, Eric Bromwell (D-8), currently represents part of Baltimore County in the House of Delegates.
Recommended sentencing guidelines call for a federal prison term for Bromwell of at least 6 1/2 years. But his defense attorney is now asking U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz to depart from those guidelines, based in large part on the persuasive power of the letters.
