State Legislators Advocate for Light Rail on CCT

A group of thirteen Montgomery County state legislators has written to the Governor asking him to select light rail for the Corridor Cities Transitway (CCT). The group includes every legislator from Districts 15, 17 and 39 - which account for the entire alignment of the project - except for Delegate Luiz Simmons (D-17). Additionally, District 14 Delegate Karen Montgomery and District 14 Senator Rona Kramer signed on. Kramer, along with District 39 Senator Nancy King, is a member of the Senate's critical Budget and Taxation Committee. The County Council voted 6-3 to support light rail, with Council Members Phil Andrews, Marc Elrich and Roger Berliner supporting bus rapid transit instead.

Following is the joint letter.

You have answered the easy question legislators. Now, are you going to try and jam the homeowners with an after-the-election gas tax increase or are you going to be responsible and try to dedicate a penny of the sales tax, which you just increased by 20%, to the transportation trust fund?

Robin as usual you don’t have any imagination, we used to have Policy Area Review where developers paid the costs associated with capacity that allowed their projects to go forward. What’s wrong with collecting from the projects going into West Gaithersburg and Germantown and if possible Clarksburg to help pay for the CCT. Why does there need to be a gas tax or increased sales tax. It’s the developers of these projects that benefit by the CCT. Also let’s ask our congressmen to bring home the bacon for transit. What a stimulus that would make. Just a thought and by the way, Happy Thanksgiving to all that come to MPW and to our hosts Adam. Adam you have a lot to be Thankful this Thanksgiving.... Godbless you and your family.

Thanks Cary. I know that you know what it's like to have a great family that you can be thankful for every day.

Cary, you need to read more carefully. I said dedicate a penny of the existing sales tax, not increase the sales tax, for transportation. Our legislators, county council members and county executive are all talking about increasing the gasoline tax AFTER the 2010 election, just like they jammed homeowners with record tax increases right after the last election
