Thanks to John Barnes for his photo from the Connect with the Trail event hosted on the Capital Crescent Trail by 18 communities and attended by around 400 people according to the Washington Post photo of the event (which does not seem to be online).
The mock up gives an idea of the scope of placing trains on the Trail--all of the trees in the picture would have to go to make way for the light rail. Even if a new small paved trail is constructed next to the light-rail trains, the tree canopy that makes it such a pleasure would be gone. And no, there is not enough room for new trees once construction. The right-of-way is just wide enough to accommodate the trains. You can see more photos of the event at Save the Trail.
